Repair. Restore. Rejuvenate.

The anus is a sensitive and susceptible region of the body. Anal Rejuvenation is a specialty service offered by Los Angeles colorectal surgeon, Dr. Murrell, with the goal of repairing any abnormalities and restoring your anal region to its original form.

What Are Anal Warts?

Anal warts, also known as condyloma acuminata, are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). The HPV virus is a sexually transmitted disease and is passed from person to person by direct contact. According to the Centers for Disease Control, HPV is so common that most sexually-active men and women will get at least one type of HPV, which may include a case of anal or genital warts, at some point in their lives. Dr. Murrell is a proctologist in Los Angeles who provides some of most effective anal wart treatment Los Angeles offers.

While the condition can be transmitted by anal intercourse, it also can be spread by hand contact to the anal area or simply contact with a sexual partner’s secretions and the anal area.

It is important to note these different methods of transmission and that anal warts are not only due to having anal intercourse. Exposure to the HPV virus could have occurred recently or up to several years prior to when the anal warts were diagnosed.

Anal warts may affect the areas around the anus and inside the anus, as well as the genital area. The warts can appear as small growths or spots, and can be as tiny as the head of a pin or as large as a marble. Most times these warts are painless and most patients are unaware they have them. Common anal wart symptoms include itching, bloody or mucus discharge, and the feeling of having a bump or mass in the anal area.

Examination Process and Treatment for Anal Warts

Getting the proper treatment for anal warts is important because, if left untreated, they can grow and spread. Dr. Murrell will begin to diagnose anal warts by discussing a patient’s sexual history and performing physical and digital examinations, and possibly an endoscopic examination, like a colonoscopy.

There are several ways anal warts can be treated, from topical medications to surgical options. Dr. Murrell often will use topical medications to treat very small warts located around the anus. These medications are applied directly to the warts during an office visit, with patients returning to work after the appointment with only minimal discomfort.

Cryotherapy is another method that may be used to remove anal warts. During an in-office cryotherapy procedure the warts are destroyed through a freezing process, much like the treatment for warts found on hands.

In some cases, Dr. Murrell may need to remove the anal warts surgically depending on the size and location. For example, warts located in the anal cavity typically do not respond well to medications and will need to be removed surgically. These types of procedures are relatively quick to perform with only mild discomfort after the treatment.
